As the festive season comes into full force and many countries across Europe are looking at how to tackle the energy crisis, sustainability and energy usage has become even more important than ever before. Germany has even imposed new rules with energy conservation when it comes to the use of digital signage. Many companies are now becoming more aware of the impact of digital technology and the effect it has on the environment.
As a platform that celebrates everything digital signage, we also want to help make a difference long term, which will ultimately make an impact on sustainable living and the environment. That’s why we’ve decided to explore the different tips and tricks with how you can save energy within your school and make a real difference.
One of the easiest ways to save energy is to make sure your screens are turned off overnight, for most schools this is most likely second nature as there’s no point having screens left on if there’s nobody there to see them. As this is a manual task and if there are many screens this can be pretty time consuming, so here are some easier options.
Set the timing on your screen
If your screens have the option and settings required to turn on and off at certain times then this can be a very useful way of making sure screens are only on when necessary. If the screens have the capability to do so, set each of them to only be on within specific hours such as between 8am and 4pm, or you can set different screens to only be on when they’re going to be seen. Take the screen in the dinner hall for instance, it probably only needs to be scheduled to be on when it’s being used at lunch time.
Save energy with timer plugs
As TV screens can sometimes be unpredictable and settings differ for various models, smart timer plugs can be a great alternative to use. Director of Innovation at RGS Worcester, John Jones explained how helpful they were in our 5 top digital signage tips from education professionals blog piece. Depending on the types used, timer plugs can be a great way of scheduling your digital signage to display and showcase whilst also having the ability to conserve energy when needed.

What’s to say you can’t go even smarter? During our recent ‘Creating engaging content for digital signage’ webinar, Alex Lynch at Alpha Academies Trust commented,
“Pairing our TrilbyTV players with WiFi Smart plugs means Alpha Academies Trust can monitor energy usage across multiple sites, schedule players and also screens to turn off at the end of the day and automatically come back on in the morning. We also went one step further and used an Amazon Alexa to connect to the Wifi Smart Plugs, which means we can simply ask Alexa to turn our Digital Signage on or off for us.”
