It’s personally my biggest bug bear. Litter! It’s one thing that really gets my goat and often I find myself thinking about how I can tackle the problem. When I go cycling and see litter that has been thrown out of a car window or fly tipped in a farmer’s gate it just makes me sad. But creating a partnership between TrilbyTV and Keep Britain Tidy makes me a lot happier. 🙂
Of course it’s about educating the importance of looking after our environment, and the earlier the better. So we have teamed up with Keep Britain Tidy to help promote their Great Big School Clean that runs from the 21st March to the 6th April. The focus is to encourage children to love where they live, show pride in their communities, and care for their surroundings from a young age.
We couldn’t be prouder to support this initiative with a selection of promotional slides now available in our Content Catalogue. As well as content to promote the event there’s also useful hints and tips when it comes to looking after our wildlife and recycling. And what about TrilbyTV you may ask? What are we doing personally to support the campaign? Well a few of our members of staff and their families have been out and about collecting litter, including myself.
Living in Devon by the sea you will often see me and my wife out collecting rubbish from the beach. We usually find that after storms or when heavy amounts of seaweed wash up that rubbish is at its worst. We have found everything from shoes, to tennis rackets to USB leads washed up on the beach. It’s a great way to start the day and feel good that you have made a difference to the local environment in some way.

We talk about the importance of educating early on when it comes to looking after our environment which is why I was over the moon when my children asked me if we could buy a litter picker. Constantly spotting drinks cans, crisp packets, fast food packaging and even disposable vapes whilst walking our dog, we have all been keen to ensure the place that we live is safe, clean and tidy for all to enjoy.

I’ve always been a country bumpkin, happier in a field than a city, so the countryside is something I’d love to see preserved and cared for. What shocked me the most when collecting rubbish, only just a mile or so down the road, was the varying type of litter thrown. Sure, there were plenty of empty bottles and cans but there was also lots of rubbish for children’s food products.
The message of Keeping Britain Tidy needs to spread to all ages as dropping litter is a habit that can easily be quashed. Material science is a fascinating subject, perhaps someone reading this may develop something better in the future. For now, knowing how long materials take to decompose (in a lot of cases, multiple lifetimes), may open people’s eyes to the footprint you leave behind.
