TrilbyTV Frequently Asked Questions

Is TrilbyTV secure ?
Depending on the installation requested TrilbyTV can be installed in the School on its own server or using your hardware. Users are held in an SQL database or the system can link via LDAP to Active Directory or Open Directory. Users can access the system via the Internet only if you allow external access to the server.

Can Parents and community members look at media ?
Yes, you can set certain media to be viewable to Guest users. You are fully in control of managing which clips can be seen and by who.

Who is responsible for the up keep and maintenance of the system ?
Trilby TV is a fully managed system. We will look after the hardware (if we provided it) and software for the duration of the lease.

Do I need training ?
Included in the set up costs is a training session for staff.

Who checks the content ?
Before being published all content is approved by a Moderator. This can be a staff member or in some cases a student group.

Can Trilby TV be customised to match the School name and colours ?
Yes, TrilbyTV is fully customisable to match the Schools Name and Colours. Most schools choose to name the system after their school, and some are more adventurous.

What is the specification of the TrilbyTV server ?
It’s a custom built server with a high speed Intel quad core processor, 4 GB RAM and three 750GB hard drives. The server software runs on Windows Server 2008 Web Edition.

How do backups work ?
Two of the hard drives are in a RAID 1 (mirror) configuration that holds the TrilbyTV software and any media. The other drive holds the operating system. Every night a copy of the information on the data drive is copied to the system drive.
For extra piece of mind the nightly backup can also be copied to another device. We can support you in setting this up, but The storage and management of the backup are down to you.

What do I need to view media on TrilbyTV ?
All you need is a web browser with javascript and cookies enabled with Adobe Flash Player 9 or better. We have tested the site on Mac and Windows PCs with IE, Firefox, Safari and Chrome.

How many users can watch video on TrilbyTV ?
On a 100mbps network it’s possible for up to 125 users to access video at the exact same time without the video stopping to buffer. On a 1000mbps network it’s possible for up to 1250 to users to view video. These numbers assume that there is no other network usage and a 5 minute video clip is being viewed. In reality users tend to access clips at different times and current installations of the system has proven to be responsive even under heavy load.

How much video can I store on TrilbyTV ?
If you use our server, you can store around 1200 hours or 50 days of video. These numbers may vary depending on the content of the videos and if other types of media are stored.

Can TrilbyTV link to our VLE ?
Every media item stored on TrilbyTV has a unique web address allowing you to link directly to that item from within your VLE.

Do we need to renew the lease annually ?
The lease provides support, maintenance and any updates we release during the lease period. We are always adding new features in response to user feedback so renewing the lease gives you access to these. If you do not wish to renew then you will keep the installation as it is and it will remain fully functional. If you decide at a later date to continue the lease and support that is fine.

What file formats are supported ?
TrilbyTV accepts files in any current video format, AVI, MOV, FLV, 3GPP, M4V and many more.
The gallery accepts files in JPEG, GIF and PNG formats and you can upload MP3 files to the audio library.

What sort of server is needed ?
If you decide to provide your own server you will need to ensure there is enough hard drive capacity for the original files and their compressed versions. We also suggest you have a quad core CPU as compression of video is processor intensive.
